Pore-O-Pac Grain Filler
• Natural • Medium Brown Walnut • Mahogany
|
To obtain a glass smooth gloss finish with no grain showing, often referred to as a Mirror or ‘Piano Finish’, it is necessary to fill the pores especially on Oak, Ash, Walnut, Mahogany and other open pored woods.
For filling pores, a grain filler will yield best result with the least effort.
Make a test, on a scrap of the same wood if possible. The filler will most likely look lighter in tone when dry. Evaluate the final color sample with the topcoats in place.
For traditional and antiqued rich toned finishes, emphasize the wood grain by using a darker color filler for depth of tone and for contrast.
To minimize a large strong grain pattern, especially on light toned or bleached woods, a filler as close as possible to the background color is used.
Note: To avoid a muddy or a ‘splotchy’ finish, Pore-O-Pac should be used over a light even wash coat of sealer (dewaxed shellac, lacquer sanding sealer or vinyl sealer) to avoid color bleeding from the filler into the surrounding dyed or natural wood color.

Text from the Can Label
Behlen Pore-O-Pac Grain Filler
is designed to fill the pores of open grained woods such as Oak, Ash, Mahogany, and Walnut in order to produce a hard, non-shrinking foundation for the application of stain and finish.
Pore-O-Pac Grain Filler is available in premixed wood colors and Natural which
can be intermixed to adjust tone and color.
The Natural may be colored with Behlen Master Colors, Furniture Powers, or Japan Colors to any desired shade or color.
Directions:
MIX WELL Before Using.
For Best Workability reduce by volume,
4 parts Pore-O-Pac Filler to
1 part of Pore-O-Pac Reducer.
(To fill tight grained woods with small pores, a thinner mixture may be needed.
In that case additional drying time is required)
Surface Preparation:
Prepare the wood to a 180 or 220 grit sanding smoothness. Clean the surface of all dust oils or solvents.

Pore-O-Pac Grain Filler
Application:
1. Apply freely across the surface, working
the filler into the grain with the Grain
Spreader / Leveler or, on non-flat surfaces,
a medium soft brush.
2. Reapply lightly with the grain.
3. Allow a few minutes for drying,
to a DULL look.
4. Use the Spreader / Leveler or a
plastic putty knife to remove the excess,
drawing at a 45° angle to the grain.
5. Wipe the grain with a clean dry cloth,
or clean burlap.
6. If additional filling is required, allow overnight drying, & repeat the above steps.
Note:
If the Pore-O-Pac is allowed to dry too long or too heavy and the excess cannot be scraped off, dampen a cloth with Pore-O-Pac Reducer and lightly wipe the grain to remove excess.
Allow overnight drying time before topcoating.
Topcoating:
Note: Prior to topcoating allow overnight
(or better 24 Hours) drying to ensure that all solvents have evaporated from the filler. If the solvent has not completely evaporated from the filler, a gray ghosting effect may occur in the finishing steps.
Pore-O-Pac may be top-coated with lacquer, acrylic, shellac or varnish. Allow longer recoating time with varnish due to solvent absorption by the Pore-O-Pac.
While Behlen water based finishes may be applied over Pore-O-Pac, we highly suggest the using Behlen Water based grain filler.
