Dewaxed blonde shellac flake. The classic light dewaxed grade and the everyday clear coat — pale enough to leave the color of the wood alone, dewaxed enough to sit cleanly under any topcoat that follows.

Dewaxed flake is shellac with its natural wax separated out, nothing added to take its place. It dries hard and clear, dissolves without the cloudiness waxy grades leave in solution, and sits cleanly under and over other finishes, polyurethane included.

Blonde is the working default for a lot of benches — pale woods, French polishing, sanding sealer, and any project where the finish should disappear into the wood rather than announce itself. If you keep one dewaxed grade on the shelf, this is usually it.
