Aruna — a pale golden button with a blush of red, named for the old word for the first light of dawn. On the work it warms the wood like early sun: body and glow, without the depth of the dark grades.
A first-ever grade. A premium super golden button from the Jeth harvest of the kusum tree, made only at our house. This run is from the 2026 Jeth harvest: the seedlac comes off the kusum tree — the same revered species behind the winter Kusmi grades — and carries a redder cast where Kusmi runs yellow. Sticklac is hand-selected for the finest source material, then ground and washed repeatedly for purity.
A single-crop button: the entire offering is 100% from that single harvest, pressed in a single run of buttons. What we have is this year's harvest.
Reach for Aruna where the finish itself is part of what you see — fine furniture, instrument work, pale heirloom surfaces that want warmth and glow without darkening. It sits with Hemanta at the top of the button shelf: golden where Kusmi runs yellow, with that first-light blush all its own.
Most commercial shellac sold today is dewaxed flake — a 20th-century industrial product. Button lac is the older form, the one classical finishing texts describe. The wax is part of the structure, not an impurity to be removed. The buttons are produced by hand in small operations, weighed and packed one bag at a time.
